Communicable Disease Investigations |
Our nurses, and sometimes our sanitarian, follow up on disease reports such as TB, Salmonella, and Shigella to minimize the spread of disease and to determine the source of the initial reported case. |
Environmental Complaints |
Report any environmental issues or complaints such as trash, debris, rodents, and insects, etc. by calling our office at (413) 263-3206. All complaints will be investigated. |
Food Safety |
All local food establishments, including restaurants, retail food, catering and mobile/pushcart businesses are inspected regularly and licensed yearly. |
Housing Complaints |
Housing complaints may be initiated by calling our office at (413) 263-3206 and will be investigated. Massachusetts rental voucher inspections are also available (see Fee Schedule). |
Lead Paint Poisoning Prevention |
Lead paint screening is free to West Springfield children six years and under. Call the Health Department for details. |
Pools & Spas, Tanning and Tattoo Establishments |
All swimming pools (public and semi-public), tanning, and tattoo establishments are inspected regularly and licensed yearly. |
TB Testing |
TB skin testing is offered on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or by appointment by calling (413) 263-3207. |
Rabies Control |
This office follows up on animal bite reports and other potential human, dog or cat exposures to rabies. This is to prevent the spread of this fatal disease. We work with the regional animal control agency (Thomas.J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center) and the police department on this matter. |
Septic Systems |
Septic system inspections may be scheduled by calling (413) 263-3206 or 3204. Septic installers and haulers must obtain a permit prior to performing any work on a septic system. Permits may be obtained through our office; see Fee Schedule for septic installer/hauler licensing fee. |
Special Events at the Big E. |
Temporary permits are issued to food vendors for all special events held on the Big E (Eastern States Exposition) grounds. Vendors interested in obtaining a temporary food service permit should contact the Big E directly at (413) 737-2443. |
Trash Haulers/Recycling Plan |
New city ordinance (5/07) requires Trash Haulers to be licensed by the Health Department. A Recycling Plan form also needs to be filled out. |
Vaccinations and Immunizations |
Adult immunization (Tetanus and Pneunomia) vaccines by appointment in the Health Department. Childhood vaccination clinic first Wednesday each month at 9:00 a.m. Pre-registration is required by calling the Health Department. Flu clinic for the elderly is held yearly. |
